Today, rats still mostly have the same stigma they’ve had for centuries; dirty, food stealing rodents. They roam subway stations, streets, and even our homes. They outnumber the amount of people in the world. In truth, they haven’t changed much since the beginning of their time on Earth. But things might be changing.
Around 6% of animal owners have rats, which live in cages and can be taught tricks. Slowly, we’re beginning to appreciate these creatures. Studies show that rats have a high IQ and are capable of learning tricks, solving problems, and recognizing faces. Hopefully, we’ll soon be able to look past the past of rats and accept them for the fascinating creatures they are.
Fun Facts!
Below are my favourite fun facts about rats:
- Rats can laugh, feel empathy, and dream. Rats go through REM sleep just like us!
- Some cultures worship rats. The religion of Karni Mata Mandir don’t shoo away rats, but welcome them.
- Rats cannot vomit. This is why rat poison works on rats; they are unable to get rid of the toxin.
- Rats are incredibly intelligent. For such a small animal, rats surprise humans with their abilities. Rats can sniff out illness in humans, explosives, and even the scales of another animal. They can also count to ten and respond to their own name.
- Rats use their whiskers to help them stay balanced and get an idea of their surroundings. By dragging their whiskers on the ground, they can figure out where they are.
- Rats are unable to get sick, and their teeth never stop growing.
